September 2011

Dear Articulation Officers and Counselors,

I hope your Fall term is off to a great start. Every year we send a letter to California community college counselors and articulation officers with important updates and information regarding admissions to the Haas Undergraduate Program. We hope you find this letter helpful and ask that you pass the information along to any of your students interested in applying to the business major at UC Berkeley.

IMPORTANT: Admission changes for students entering Haas in Fall 2012 and beyond

We’re hoping these changes will streamline the admissions process and increase our pool of eligible transfer applicants. The admission changes are reflected on the www.assist.org articulation agreements and listed below:

1. Applicants are required to take 2 semesters (3 quarters) of calculus.

2. Literature/Writing prerequisite is no longer required.
3. Breadth is no longer required for admission; breadth is now a degree requirement. Although breadth is not required for admission, students are encouraged to take breadth courses during their time at the community college.

HAAS DEFINING PRINCIPLES

The goal of the admissions review process is not only to evaluate an applicant's ability to handle the academic rigor, but also to identify those who demonstrate a solid fit with our program. The Haas Undergraduate Program has a distinct culture and we seek applicants who represent the School's
Four Defining Principles: Question the Status Quo, Confidence without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. Please have your students familiarize themselves with these principles as they will be prominently featured in the Haas supplemental application.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

I receive many phone calls from counselors and students regarding foreign language for international students. English is typically the foreign language for international students who attended high school in another country. For example if a student went to high school in Spain where Spanish is the language of instruction and took the 3rd level of English in high school, English is the foreign language. If admitted to Haas, the student would need to submit high school transcripts to verify completion of English. Proficiency exams administered at a UC and SAT II exams may also be used to fulfill the foreign language requirement. Please visit our web site http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/foreign_language.html for additional information about the Haas foreign language requirement.

BREADTH

We need your help to update the breadth section of the articulation agreements. Please check your school’s articulation agreement on www.assist.org. If your school does not have courses listed for each of the 7 breadth categories or a limited selection of courses, please compile a list of additional courses to be added. Articulation officers should then submit the course information to Aurelia Long, UC Berkeley's articulation officer as soon as possible.

EXAM CREDIT

Students with credit from AP, IB and A Level exams should review the Haas exam credit summary to determine how exams may be applied to program requirements.

INELIGIBLE STUDENTS

Every year the majority of our transfer applicants are denied because they fail to show planned completion of our admission requirements. Most of the ineligible students are applicants from California community colleges. Please have prospective Haas applicants visit www.assist.org and follow the articulation agreement.

• All required courses must be completed by the end of the Spring term prior to starting at the Haas School. If a student is missing 1 required course he or she will be considered ineligible. We require 100% completion of the admission requirements.

• IGETC is not sufficient to fulfill Haas requirements. All applicants to Haas must follow the articulation agreement on www.assist.org.

• Students should complete the English Reading & Composition prerequisite at one school unless the R1A and R1B equivalents are clearly specified on the articulation agreement.

• All prerequisites must be completed within 5 years prior to starting at the Haas School. For example, students who plan to start at the Haas School in Fall 2012 cannot use prerequisites taken prior to Fall 2007. Prerequisites taken prior to Fall 2007 must be repeated.

There were close to 800 ineligible California community college students who applied to Haas for Fall 2011. Additional admission statistics can be found on our web site: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/class_profile.html

ADMISSIONS PRESENTATION
Join us on Cal Day!
Every year in April, UC Berkeley hosts Cal Day. This is a community celebration and an opportunity for prospective students to visit the campus and the Haas School. Counselors are available to answer questions; current students give tours and talk about life as a business student. We will also have a presentation specifically designed for transfer students. So please mark your calendars and tell your students about Cal Day 2012, Saturday, April 21.

ADVISING

Encourage your students to call us or stop by our office at any time during our office hours. We can answer their questions, assist them with schedule planning and dispel any myths they may have heard about Haas. We want our applicants to be informed and we enjoy talking to students about Haas and the admissions process. Our phone number is 510-642-1421 and we are located in room S450 at the Haas School. Our office is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am - 4pm and Tuesday from 10am - 4pm. There is no need to schedule an appointment as we will always have an advisor available to assist you during these times.

Please note: The Haas Undergraduate Program will be closed from December 26 – December 30.

Please assist us by forwarding this e-mail to students who may be interested in the business major at UC Berkeley. I encourage all of you to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you,
