Subject:  New UC Irvine online course open to transfer students

(Corrected 09-12-11)

Good afternoon

I have some additional information regarding this course that might be useful for members of the listserv.

Unfortunately, the Fall 2011 section of our online introductory biology course has been cancelled due to low enrollments. We plan to offer BIO SCI_XI93 again next Fall and are scheduling a number of other general education courses for the upcoming Winter and Spring quarters.

A few transfer counselors have asked about whether or not students who take advantage of this opportunity would establish an official UC Irvine transcript and, if so, jeopardize their chances of later transferring to UC Irvine should they not earn a C or better in the online course. To clarify:

Students who take advantage of these online XI courses would be registering for these courses through the Extension office. Final grades will appear on an Extension transcript and are not automatically forwarded on to the main campus. The UCI application does, however, instruct students to list all previous educational experiences. At this point, it is the student’s responsibility to request a transcript from UCI Extension and manually submit them to the main campus.

Please note that all courses taken through Extension will appear on the student’s transcript. Therefore, if the student earned an A, B, or C for this course but did not successfully pass another online XI course, UCI would see both of these courses on the student’s Extension transcript. Students who are in danger of failing do have the option of dropping the course up until the final week of instruction.

I will send additional information as we finalize the Winter 2012 and Spring 2012 offerings. Thank you again for your support of this pilot project. Have a wonderful weekend!
