Subject: New UC Irvine online course open to transfer students

For the first time ever, our main campus is collaborating with UC Irvine Extension to offer a first-year introductory Biology course completely online and open to the general public. Community college students will be able to fulfill their general education requirements for their major or for transfer to UC Irvine without formal admission into the University.

About the Course:
From DNA to Organisms
(Biological Science XI93)

This course is equivalent to the first year core class required for all biological science majors at UCI. It provides an introduction to the basic concepts of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, organ development, and how these relate to human health. This 100% online course will led by Dr. Diane O’Dowd, professor of Developmental & Cell Biology, UCI School of Biological Sciences.

Benefits to students:
• Experience what it is like to take a first-year UCI Biology class
• Earn UC undergraduate credit
• Fulfill general education credit requirement for their major or for transfer
• Increase their understanding of biology and how it relates to human health

The course is held from September 23 through December 5, 2011. More information about the course is located at: www.extension.uci.edu/bio93.

We are asking for your help in making this information accessible to community college students in California. I am always available to answer any questions that interested students may have. If there are additional courses you would like to see offered online, or if you would like to discuss other ways in which we can partner in this endeavor, please contact me directly at (949) 824-0697 or at ayngelmo@uci.edu.

Thank you for your consideration and have a wonderful rest of the week.

Sincerely,
