Subject: Meeting CSU Requirements in GE

Dear articulation officers,

For students who come to you with prior learning at the college level, please remember that the CSU provides a few ways to meet requirements for general education:

1. Students who already hold a bachelors degree from the CSU are cleared of lower division requirements (EO 1033 section 5.6).

2. Students who hold a bachelor's degree from the UC are cleared of all our general education requirements (EO 1033 section 2.1.3).

3. Individual courses and exams in general education subjects may also be applied to various GE requirements, as laid out in EO 1033 Article 5, EO 1036, and Coded Memorandum AA-2010-09, released earlier this month to update systemwide acceptance of standardized exams, including CLEP.

4. Students with baccalaureate degrees who return to us for a degree in nursing are exempt from all coursework except the coursework that is "unique and exclusively required to earning a nursing degree from that institution," per Education Code 66055.8.

Please share this information as appropriate, particularly with those who advise adult and continuing students.

Thank you,

Ken
