PROFILE OF UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES:

The College of Letters and Science offers more than 80 majors, including both traditional academic study and a variety of unique, interdisciplinary programs that reflect the long-standing faculty tradition of collaboration and partnership. Biological Sciences, Economics, Global and International Studies, Religious Studies, and Film and Media Studies are popular majors.

The College of Creative Studies offers an alternative approach for students who are ready for advanced, independent work in the arts or sciences. To be admitted to the college, students must demonstrate unusual talent as well as commitment to pursuing independent work at a high level in art, biology, chemistry/biochemistry, computer science, literature, mathematics, music composition or physics.

The College of Engineering offers degree programs in Chemical, Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and in Computer Science. Research by the UCSB engineering faculty is at the forefront in materials science, microelectronics and nanotechnology. The College of Engineering added a foreign language option to its general education pattern. The requirement is the same as for Area B of the College of Letters and Science GE. The COE foreign language is listed as Area H.

UPPER DIVISION TRANSFER ADMISSION:

Fall 2012 Plans: Discussion of future selection process by faculty: likely to implement additional selection criteria related to major preparation for fall 2013 Accepts transfer applicants for Fall quarter only.

  • All required coursework must be completed by the end of Spring for Fall admission.
  • o Applicants in Engineering, Computer Science, Biological Sciences and Economics are screened for at least partial completion of major-preparation coursework. Applicants in the performance majors of Dance, Music and Theater must audition. Applicants to the College of Creative Studies must complete a supplemental application.
  • An applicant may be considered for admission to an alternate major if a valid alternate major is indicated on the application. Such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

TAG NOTES:

  • TAG’s are available for nearly all majors at UCSB except performing arts majors in the College of Letters and Science, and all majors in the College of Creative Studies.
  • 2012-2013 UCSB TAG
  • The minimum GPA for College of Letters and Science and Engineering TAGS is 3.2 for Fall 2012.

IGETC:

Students who transfer into the College of Letters and Science and the College of Creative Studies may use IGETC to substitute for general education requirements. Students planning to transfer into a major in computer science or the biological or physical sciences must be careful to complete lower-division major prerequisites to ensure competitiveness and make normal, timely progress through the major. Transfer students in the College of Engineering are encouraged to focus on the preparation for their major rather than on general education courses, but may also use IGETC to substitute for general education requirements. As part of their general education, all students in the College of Engineering are required to complete a depth requirement. Students who wish to satisfy the depth requirement prior to transfer must complete a yearlong sequence in the history of world civilization, history of Western civilization, history of the United States, history of Western philosophy or history of Western art. Students may want to choose courses for IGETC that will concurrently satisfy the depth requirement. Students may also complete the depth requirement with upper-division coursework after transferring.

MAJOR-SPECIFIC ADMISSION INFORMATION:

The College of Engineering added a foreign language option to its general education pattern. The requirement is the same as for Area B of the College of Letters and Science GE. The COE foreign language is listed as Area H.

UPDATES ON MAJORS:

  • The Psychology Department is now the Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences. All undergraduate major requirements will remain the same.
  • The Sociocultural Linguistics Emphasis has been replaced by Language, Culture, and Society, B.A.
  • The B.S. degree in Computer Engineering no longer has a pre-major requirement.
  • Pre-major course selection for admission to the Economics and Economics and Accounting majors has been streamlined (micro, macro, stats plus one calculus course or two calculus courses). See new language on assist.org.
  • The College of Letters and Science has begun discussions about pre-major screening for all majors requiring completion of the Chemistry 1A-1B-1C series including labs beginning fall 2013. Students who do not complete the courses by the end of the spring term and earn a specified GPA will not be admitted to the major.
  • In addition to completing a 1 year sequence of General Chemistry with laboratory, with no individual grade less than “C”, students interested in some Biological Science majors must also complete 1 sequence (2-3 terms) of major-applicable General Biology with laboratory, with no individual grade less than “C”. A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better is required in these courses.
