o PROFILE OF UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES:

◊ The Berkeley campus is divided into 14 colleges and schools, most of which are subdivided into departments. Colleges and schools that offer programs for undergraduates are the Haas School of Business, College of Chemistry, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Design, College of Letters and Science, and College of Natural Resources. The College of Letters and Science is the largest, with more than half the campus's faculty and nearly three-quarters of its undergraduate students.

College of Chemistry: College of Chemistry transfer applicants are expected to complete, at a minimum, courses equivalent to: Chemistry 1A-1AL-1B; Mathematics 1A-1B; Physics 7A (choice of 7A or 8A for chemical biology majors); English R1A (plus English R1B for chemistry majors and chemical biology majors) plus two additional courses toward the major by the end of the spring term before transfer.
.
2011 Conference Updates:
   Chemical Engineering
   - Biology 1A and MATLAB before transfer.
   Chemistry and Chemical Biology
   - Quantitative analysis course (if not included in general chemistry sequence).

o College Updates. See: http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=5559

Colleges of Engineering and Environmental Design, and the Haas School of Business: Applicants must complete the required 60 semester units and all general education/ breadth and major-prerequisite courses by the end of the spring term preceding enrollment. College of Engineering has changed the method of assessing an applicant’s lower-division preparation.
- Required Core Courses: Applicants to the College of Engineering majors must complete the equivalent of all required core UC Berkeley preparation courses in order to be eligible for admission. If a community college series of courses is required, all the courses in the series must be completed to receive credit. No partial credit is given. IMPORTANT: Only applicants who have completed 100 percent of these required core courses by the end of the spring semester will be considered for admission.
- Strongly Recommended Courses: Other lower-division UC Berkeley courses required for graduation are also listed in the major agreements and are strongly recommended to be taken to strengthen one’s application. The more of these courses completed, the stronger the application will be.
2011 Conference Updates:
Engineering-New major - Energy Engineering (under approval).
   - For Reading & Composition: equivalent of English 1A and 1B.
   - Follow assist.org and not IGETC.
   Environmental Design:
   - Now accepting IGETC certification.
   - Only 1 semester of calculus required for transfer admission & and graduation for Architecture majors.

□  College of Letters and Science (L&S): Applicants must complete the required 60 semester units, all college breadth requirements and most, if not all, major prerequisites by the end of the spring term preceding enrollment. Applicants are expected to complete breadth requirements through one of three patterns: L&S requirements in reading and composition, foreign language and quantitative reasoning; the UC Reciprocity Agreement (for students transferring from other UC campuses); or IGETC (for California community college students).
2011 Conference Updates:
Asian Studies – New Track: Asian Religions.
Interdisciplinary Studies – New Minor: Human Rights.

College of Natural Resources: Applicants must complete the required 60 semester units and all general education/ breadth and major prerequisite courses by the end of spring term preceding enrollment.

Haas School of Business:
2011 Conference Updates:
   - New - Global Management Concentration.
   - Breadth not required for admission; however, students are encouraged to spread breadth coursework over four years
   - 2 semesters (3 quarters) of Calculus now required.
   - Literature/Writing no longer required.

UPPER DIVISION TRANSFER ADMISSION:

  • Accepts transfer applicants for the Fall semester only.
  • Transfer admission is limited to students who have or will have completed a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester units by the end of the spring term of the current academic year. As a junior transfer applicant, you must indicate your intended major on the UC application, as your application for admission will be reviewed based on the completion of prerequisite courses for a particular academic program at Berkeley. See http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/transfer.asp.
  • Students are selected primarily on the basis of academic performance and preparation, as assessed by review of college GPA, level of completion of prerequisite courses for the major and general education requirements for the college or school. Other criteria may be considered after comprehensive review of all academic and personal information provided on the application. This includes extracurricular accomplishment, employment, personal qualities such as leadership or motivation, and likely contribution to the intellectual and cultural vitality of the campus. Demonstrated interest in the major may be considered as well. All achievements are considered in the context of the opportunities available to the applicant and the ways in which he or she has responded to them. Transfer students from both two-year and four-year institutions are admitted; however, preference is given to California community college transfer applicants who are California residents.
  • Application Tips for Counselors and Students Fall 2012: Presenting Yourself on the UC Application (Including the Personal Statement) [PPT]

o CHANGES TO ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS THAT WILL AFFECT STUDENTS ENTERING HAAS IN FALL 2012:
   - Remove the literature/writing requirement.
   - Add a second semester of calculus as prerequisite requirement.
   - Change the current breadth requirements from an admission requirement to a degree requirement.

TAG NOTES: None.

IGETC: IGETC is acceptable for all majors in the College of Letters and Science. The Haas School of Business and the colleges of Engineering, Environmental Design and Chemistry have extensive, prescribed major prerequisites. In general, IGETC is not appropriate preparation for majors in these colleges. Although IGETC satisfies breadth requirements for most majors in the College of Natural Resources, specific lower-division major requirements must still be satisfied. Be sure to check with the college or visit the ASSIST website for more information.

Major Specific Admissions Information:

  • Students who cannot be accommodated in a first-choice major will not be admitted in an alternate major.
  • Most highly selective majors are: Haas School of Business; all social science majors in the College of Letters and Science, in particular: Psychology, Economics, Social Welfare, Computer Science, and Molecular and Cell Biology; most Engineering majors.
  • Students applying to the professional schools and colleges are admitted directly to the major and should not plan to change majors. Applicants to majors in the College of Letters and Science are admitted to the division that administers the major; once on campus, they are expected to formally declare a major in that division. Because some majors are impacted and students are expected to declare a major within one semester of admission, opportunities to move into a major in a different division are very limited.

o HOUSING: Fall junior transfers are guaranteed a housing offer for 1 year provided that they adhere to deadlines and keep their housing preferences broad.
